Sales have been growing “quite well, even since September 11th,” reported Gary Bennett, marketing and communications manager at National Enzyme Company (Forsyth, Mo.). “Our fastest growing category is digestive health enzymes sold for nutritional supplements. That’s where we’re spending most of our efforts,” he said, adding that the company experienced 20% growth in the category during the past year.

A market leader in digestive enzymes, National Enzyme Company estimates it has a 20% share of the $90-million wholesale market for supplemental digestive enzymes in the U.S. Other key players include Specialty Enzyme Company and Deerland.

In some distribution segments, the company estimates its market share is far higher. “We’ve done some research and found that of digestive enzyme products sold on the Internet, we are 38% of the business,” Bennett claimed. “We might be even stronger in the professional (practitioner) market.”
