Horizon Organic Dairy: A Global Opportunity

Business has been intense for Horizon Organic Dairy (Boulder, Colo.) over the last year and a half. In April 1998, Horizon kicked off its acquisition program by purchasing the Juniper Valley brand of organic dairy products in the New York area. This was followed by our initial public offering in July 1998 and the formation of a strategic alliance with Suiza Foods (a leading conventional dairy company in the United States), which owns about 15% of Horizon's stock. Suiza's processing and distribution facilities across the country have the potential to benefit Horizon's future growth.
Horizon also diversified beyond dairy products, introducing organic not-from-concentrate citrus juices (orange and grapefruit) in the fall of 1998. Far from curdling the business mix, this met with success beyond our expectations. Horizon also added NuCal, the largest California egg producer, as an egg licensee for distribution in the West along with licensee Glenwood Farms (Jeterville, Va.), which continues to produce eggs for distribution in the East. In the first quarter of 1999, Horizon also signed a licensing agreement with Takanashi to co-brand organic yogurt for the Japanese market and will serve as a consultant to help convert Japanese farmers to organic agriculture. ....
