Sports nutrition is characterized by novelty, glamour, daring—and antagonistic data. “That’s what makes it such a compelling niche for product innovations,” said Anthony Almada, founder and chief scientific officer of IMAGINutrition and MetaRe-sponse Sciences (Aptos, Calif) and co-founder and past-president of EAS.

“Product innovation thrives where there are consumers who are emphatic enthusiasts and eager to try the latest offerings, even if the science is inconclusive,” said Almada. “There are more innovative consumers on the far extreme of the adoption-diffusion curve in sports nutrition (characterized by an obsessive or compelling interest in how they look and perform) than in any other supplement segment.”
