NBJ: How has business been over the last three years? Define some highlights and challenges.
Capsugel: Manufacturers have shifted priority from scrambling to meet demand to focusing on operational efficiency and profitability. Pricing pressures on the retailer have translated back through the supply chain. Today the contract manufacturing business has surplus capacity, and as a consequence not all contract manufacturers will survive.
For Capsugel specifically, several of our new products have expanded from niche markets into substantial lines of business. For instance, our Vcaps, capsules of plant origin, have seen double-digit growth in a flat market. A major challenge for us has been compensating for the negative growth of the herbal supplement segment that has disproportionately affected capsule sales, since more than half of all herbal products are in capsule form....
