Price and quality are the big issues in nutrition industry supply, but globalization, shortages, branding and marketing contribute to the complexity of this challenging business.

What on paper looked like stagnant growth in the U.S. nutrition industry raw material & ingredient supply (RMIS) market in 2004 belied a hotly competitive and somewhat stormy year. According to NBJ, raw material sales for supplements declined narrowly overall in 2004 at a rate of 0.4% compared to a gain of 2.2% in 2003. The uptick in 2003 followed three consecutive years of decline in supplement supply sales, fueled by a downturn turn in prices that have fallen anywhere from 20-50% or more since 2000 in major categories, depending on the commodity.

The addition of functional food supply changes 2004 from a negative into a 1.2% gain and brings total U.S. nutrition industry RMIS sales to $2.82 billion in 2004. It has been more than five years since suppliers first told NBJ they expected food supply sales would outpace supplement supply in specialty nutrients, and the numbers bear this out...
